CHALLENGES
Across Sub-Saharan Africa, women face some of the highest risks of maternal complications and death worldwide. Maternal mortality can be up to 50 times higher than in high-income regions, while infant mortality remains over 12 times higher than in parts of North America. Access to consistent, high-quality maternal care is limited, and care pathways are often fragmented, forcing women to navigate hospitals, labs, pharmacies, and clinics that operate in silos.
These gaps result in late antenatal enrolment, low postnatal follow-up, and preventable complications. Without a system that supports women throughout the entire pregnancy journey, outcomes remain poor, costs remain high, and many mothers go without the guidance they need.
THE SOLUTION
Malaica delivers a comprehensive hybrid model that ensures every woman receives continuous, personalized support throughout her pregnancy. Each expectant mother is paired with a dedicated midwife who remains by her side from the first trimester through postpartum care. This relationship is reinforced by a digital platform that provides access to education, real-time support, and a vibrant pregnancy community, helping mothers stay engaged and informed.
Behind the scenes, Malaica’s AI-driven tools help standardize quality, flag early risks, automate common tasks, and ensure timely clinical follow-ups. Combined with essential in-person consultations, this approach bridges the gap between digital convenience and clinical reliability. The result is a more accessible, affordable, and coordinated pregnancy journey that reduces costs for payers while improving outcomes for women.
IMPACT TO DATE
Malaica has demonstrated strong early impact in Kenya, enrolling more than 1,800 women and matching each of them with skilled maternity personnel throughout pregnancy and delivery. All enrolled mothers have received postnatal family planning services, improving continuity of care after childbirth. Additionally, over 260,000 women have accessed Malaica’s free pregnancy-related educational content, expanding maternal health knowledge far beyond the paid program.
Madiro’s investment in Malaica will build on this momentum, helping the organization strengthen its model and reach more women with essential maternal health support.
